We’re finding out more about the team behind Mappin Technologies – one of the startups to join our Accelerator Programme in cohort 11.
Q: Who are the founders of your startup, and what are your backgrounds?
A:We are Dominic Rodriguez, Guglielmo Reggio and Giulio Coppola. We studied physics together at King’s College London and we are currently pursuing our master degrees at University College London and University of Cambridge.
Q: Tell us the story behind your startup – why did you start your company?
A: The decision to start our company was born after we got lost several times inside our own university! At the beginning we were then just focusing on creating an indoor navigation smartphone app for university students, but soon realised the immense potential of exploiting the indoor positioning technology behind the smartphone app to revolutionize user experience and management of large indoor premises. We moved from helping users navigate to working alongside facilities managers of universities, museums, airports, malls and any other large indoor spaces.
Q: What does success look like for you?
Success to us consists delivering disruptive, positive change for our target customers and their users. Whether this be helping visitors find their favourite artwork within museums or help facilities managers limit contagion risk within their space through the Covid-19 response tools we are currently developing, our aim is to deploy game-changing technology to solve the most pressing issues of facilities managers globally while creating opportunities to boost the potential of their premises.
Q: What’s your biggest achievement so far, and why?
A: Our biggest achievement has been working on a pilot indoor navigation app for the Guy’s campus of King’s College London. Despite our limited resources, our work was met with enthusiastic feedback from student and staff, confirming our understanding of the market need for similar digital tools. It has been a demanding test for both our technology and company which we passed with full marks and one of the key milestones that got us here in the Geovation accelerator programme
Q: What are your plans for your startup over the next six months?
A: We are currently working on improving our indoor positioning technology with the help of the Geovation engineering team and on the development of Covid-19 response tools to facilitate a safe return within shared indoor spaces while optimizing space usage. We are looking for universities, museums, airports that would be interested in working with us on the development of such tools. We are also looking to connect with angel investors that would be interested in helping us deliver the digital revolution of smart buildings.
Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself!
A: The three of us all have Italian origins, meaning we are genetically gifted cooks and have an innate passion for good wine, a combination that has generated many of our best business ideas.
