OS at Digital Shoreditch #ds15

The Digital Shoreditch event being held at Shoreditch Town Hall has been a great opportunity to showcase our innovations. As a founder partner, we have been involved with the festival for some time and are using it to help explain that there’s more to us than paper maps…

With a number of initiatives developed for the event, we had a good chance to talk to a new and varied audience.

Simulator in use

Our new 3D data simulator game – based on aerial imagery of Bournemouth – gave people a chance to interact in a gaming environment – testing their skills in a number of imagined scenarios and providing people with the chance to wonder at the quality and detail of our data too.

We developed an internal mapping app using beacons to identify the users’ location and showing where the various exhibits were located at the event. It also tracked how much time you had spent in the area and provided links to further information.

Our speakers (Miranda Sharp, Ian Holt, Ben Scott-Robinson and Cathrine Armour) explained about our innovative approach to using data as well as promoting the Geovation Hub. In a ground-breaking presentation, Miranda explained how our data would help in the event of a zombie apocalypse – a talk that was well received and generated a host of Twitter coverage!

And finally, Nick Turner and Joe Allnut ran a very well attended workshop, where users had the chance to personalise their own living logo – which was laser cut onto wooden plinths for them to take away. We’re looking forward to using this technology again at events in the future.

Our final Digital Shoreditch event encourages people to visit our new GeoVation Hub in Clerkenwell for an ‘Open house’ event and will feature a short run led by adventurer Sean Conway who has recently completed the British triathlon, swimming, cycling and finally running from John O’Groats to Lands End. He’ll then give a short talk about his adventures ahead of appearing on a TV programme following his adventures on 25 June. If you’d like to join us for the run, please register at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/get-me-to-the-hub-with-sean-conway-registration-16898031467
