Help shape the next generation of building intelligence in Great Britain.

Ordnance Survey’s (OS) National Geographic Database (NGD) Buildings data is the most comprehensive and high-quality set of buildings data available for Great Britain ever produced by OS. Ongoing enhancements are crucial in ensuring OS NGD Buildings data remains relevant and valuable to the broad spectrum of potential applications of the data. That’s why OS, in collaboration with Geovation, has established this Buildings Data Use Case Discovery Programme.

Together we are:

  • Engaging with early-stage innovators to explore and analyse the present and future data needs of users of the data.
  • Generating insights that will inform future upgrade plans for our data.

The overall aim of the programme is to ensure our data remains fit for purpose in a rapidly evolving context. Help us to shape the next generation of building intelligence in Great Britain.

Our Approach

We would like to conduct a series of interviews and exercises over the coming months with users of building data and invite all startups interested in engaging with OS and Geovation to sign up.

Example use cases

  • Viability assessments and installations of green energy solutions
  • Energy efficiency interventions and installations
  • Viability and economic assessment on property improvements
  • Retrofitting assessments
  • Property portfolio assessments
  • Planning-tech
  • Construction-tech
  • Fintech/Insurtech
  • Utilites (Energy and Water)
  • Telcomms

How can we evolve buildings data together?

Building on enhancements delivered between September 2022 and March 2025, we want to understand what further attribution and data would be most valuable to startups working with buildings data. For example, floor area estimates, clearer delineation of building features—like garages, conservatories, or lofts—and details like roof furniture and other structural elements could help unlock new opportunities, solve persistent challenges, or accelerate your solutions.
