Return of Ordnance Survey’s free OS OpenData Masterclasses

People across Great Britain are being given the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of open data and the tools and techniques to use open datasets, through a series of free masterclasses, hosted by Ordnance Survey and supported by Horizon Digital Economy Research.

This series of masterclasses will follow the format of previous workshops in combining theory and practical sessions.

We have updated the masterclass workshop material, still following the same journey of downloading the data, importing it into open source software and mashing with other open datasets to provide analysis. This session is ideal for those new to working with location data or anyone wishing to brush up on their skills.

We shall also be working with OS OpenSpace, Ordnance Survey’s free web mapping service that allows users to display up-to-date Ordnance Survey mapping in a web page or online environment. The workshop for this session will explain how to create file formats that can be easily imported into web mapping to show a list of locations.

For more advanced users, we will introduce our cartographic design principles and run through how to style map data features using open source software, and add the finishing touches to their map such as legends and scales bars.

Peter ter Haar, Director of Products and Innovation at Ordnance Survey, said: “The masterclasses are a great opportunity for people to experiment and start to develop with Ordnance Survey’s open data products and services. The sessions will provide the attendees with the tools and techniques needed to use, analyse and style a range of open datasets relevant to them.

“Today we are seeing thousands of ventures, products and applications underpinned by location data, and we want to make ensure that when developers are using digital mapping they think of Ordnance Survey. Through OS OpenData and OS OpenSpace anyone can access, for free, detailed and trusted digital mapping to support their products, services or applications.”

Ordnance Survey is able to offer up to 40 places at each master class, running from 9.30 am until 5.00pm each day. Locations and dates of the sessions:

  1. I would be interested in a training – but would need this to be in Gloucestershire to make it avaiable for me to attend. Is there going to be a more local training?

  2. Hi, myself and my colleagues would also be very interested in attending if there was another venue in Gloucestershire.

  3. I would certainly attend if the training could be in Gloucestershire.

  4. I think this training would be very useful for my Parish Council but as others have already said, it would need to be in Gloucestershire for me to be able to justify attending.

  5. Sounds an excellent opportunity but as for previous responses needs to be nearer to Gloucestershire to allow attendance – Bristol or Swindon would work!

  6. Hi
I would definitely attend the day if there was one in the Gloucester/Bristol area. It is too far to go for me to justify the travel and time and cost at the locations available.

  7. Sounds interesting but regretfully could not justify the time and cost to travel the distance to listed venues. Preferred area would be no more than 1/2 travel to Towns such as Yeovil/ Shepton Mallet in Somerset

  8. I would be very interested but Exeter is the nearest but that would still be about an hour and a half travelling each way. Taunton or Yeovil or anywhere in Somerset would be good.

  9. Yes please, a workshop in Gloucestershire would be much appreciated

  10. I am extremely interested in this training but unfortunately 14 November is not a possible date for me. To travel to Exeter (my nearest venue)would be costly for my Parish Council but I would be prepared to partially fund that myself if there was not going to be training anywhere nearer eg Taunton. Unfortunately, this time I must give it a miss. I think the possibility of a guide to OS would be very helpful, although I am reasonably conversant with maps I’m sure there’s a lot more to understand! I do hope this invaluable service will remain free in the future.

  11. I would be very interested to come to this training if it was located in Somerset or Bristol, or possibly Gloucestershire.

  12. I would also be interested in a course in the Yeovil area if that is possible. Thanks.

  13. I would be very interested but as a very part time clerk I have no spare leave from a full time job to attend It would have to be an evening or weekend

  14. There seem to be lots of us in Gloucestershire who would like a course nearer home please! Or a simple guide for dummies, if you do produce one later.

  15. This event would be of interest but is limited because of the venues. Taunton or Bristol area would be more accessible. Unfortunately I am on holiday for the month of November. Sorry to miss out.

  16. I have actually been trying to put maps on our website so this course looks fantastic. Unfortunately, I can’t make that date in Exeter which is my nearest. Would like to see a Taunton one.

  17. Exeter is the nearest to me, although still at least an hour away. However I cannot make that date and the others are much too far away. Is there any chance of a class in Somerset.

  18. Another vote for a more local Somerset/Bristol area session at a later date. Definitely interested in attending if this can be arranged.

  19. Hi, this is a great opportunity but all of the locations are approx 2 hours away from Gloucestershire. Any chance of another session but more local to the Gloucestershire area please. Thanks

  20. I would be interested in a Somerset based event. A couple of hours ‘basic’ training to cover the general principles – my brain wont absorb an ‘all day session’. Thank you Jo

  21. I would be interested in some training but am concerned that as I have not used the service and feel that a master class would be too advanced. Also agree with comments above; a simple guide for dummies would be really useful and also a venue in Somerset.

  22. This could be useful but courses are too far away. Something in Taunton for a shorter period would be helpful for the Somerset based Clerks

  23. I am very interested if there could be a course in the Gloucestershire area please. We could car share if necessary. With many thanks.

  24. I have tried to look at the open source mapping but it isn’t very intuitive and I would really welcome the chance to attend training but none of these venues are within a couple of hours travel time – Gloucestershire would be freat – I could manage North Somerset at a push.

  25. Thank you for all your comments and suggestions to run an additional OS OpenData Masterclass in the Gloucestershire/Bristol/Somerset area. Whilst we do not have plans to run further sessions this financial year, we shall consider your requests if/when we are in the planning phase for the next series in 2014.
