Innovation Birmingham join Geovation as a network hub

Joss Harris

Earlier this year we shared news of our partnership with the Engine Shed, Bristol and how this collaboration is widening the support we provide to businesses in Bristol & Bath and the South West region.

Today, we’re excited to tell you about an additional network hub that we have partnered with, and what this means for you. We also have an update from a Geovation start-up, who’s been making the most of the network hub offering.

Could you be the next to benefit? Read on to find out…

As a national initiative from Ordnance Survey and HM Land Registry, Geovation supports start-ups who are using location or property data in their offering. Whether it’s gaining a place on our fully-funded and founder-friendly business Accelerator; connecting with our in-house experienced team of software developers & business mentors; using some free desk space at our flagship hub in London; or simply connecting with the 1,200 + community – there’s a heap of benefits to becoming a member. Oh, and did we mention it’s FREE to join?

To complement these benefits, we’re building a network of partner hubs located outside of London, bringing wider support to our community – and we’re delighted to announce that the Innovation Birmingham campus will be our latest partner hub.

Part of Bruntwood SciTech, the Innovation Birmingham Campus is at the centre of the Midlands’ digital and technology economy and located in the heart of Birmingham city centre, close to Aston and Birmingham City universities. It is home to a thriving cluster of over 170 tech companies, providing opportunities for innovators, entrepreneurs and investors looking to develop or fund innovative digital start-ups with high growth potential.

The campus offers coworking, office space, meeting and conference facilities and provides a business support programme to accelerate growth, including access to finance and funding, new talent, and professional services advice. It also offers a specialist open  innovation programme –  ‘Serendip’ which co-locates promising new tech and digital start ups with large corporates and public sector organisations to drive innovation in a challenge-led environment – so there are many synergies with Geovation, making the partnership a natural fit.

Here’s a note from Gareth Whatmore, founder of DronePrep and current member of the Geovation Accelerator programme. Gareth is one of our start-ups who has used the network hub opportunity in Bristol, to his benefit:

“DronePrep is building a platform to open up airspace across the UK for responsible drone use by connecting drone pilots to landowners.

Whilst the development team at Geovation HQ in London have been working with us to build our platform we have simultaneously been on a national tour for the last three months reaching out to early adopter collaborative partners to demonstrate how DronePrep can add value, and open up airspace for, innovative applications within Media, Agricultural, Communication and Medical sectors in the West Country, Yorkshire and Hampshire respectively.

DronePrep is a national product and we have benefitted thoroughly from Geovation’s Strategic Partnership with Engine Shed in Bristol as they have given us a launchpad in areas outside London to engage and integrate our platform in important regional DronePrep growth markets.

Via Geovation’s strategic partnership with Engine Shed, DronePrep have free access to the Lounge hot-desking space and access to an amazing virtual network of 170,000 members. The staff at Engine Shed have been a fantastic support to our growth and development in Bristol, making introductions and opening doors and they can be credited with helping us secure our first client, revenue and case study collaborator in Bristol Film Office/Bristol City Council. A true example of collaborative working and growing Geovation’s economic impact in the regions. DronePrep is excited that the Geovation engagement team have forged links with Innovation Birmingham and we are looking forward to using these links to grow our regional presence in the Midlands”

Our network of 3rd party hubs have clearly brought benefits to Gareth and we’re hoping that many more of you will make use of the arrangement too.
