Guerrilla: a GeoTech startup story

By

30% of all ocean pollution is mobilised by surface water runoff. Rainwater washes the debris of human activity from our impermeable built environment and roads into our drains.

With toxicity comparable to sewage, this runoff is a cocktail of road, tyre, and brake wear, microplastics, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, etc. and is discharged into water bodies untreated. From London alone, 3 billion kilograms of contaminants are leached into our water bodies every year, damaging aquatic ecosystems and entering the human food chain. Addressing the problem at scale by infrastructural overhaul would be expensive and disruptive, so there is a need for retrofittable interventions at the first point where surface runoff converges.

The Solution:

We are Guerrilla, a company committed to mitigating the pollution caused by road runoff in cities across the globe. Our patent-pending technology offers a simple, yet effective solution to the urgent problem of city pollution leaching into the environment, impacting the health of our rivers and water supply.

Our retrofittable device is designed to be installed inside existing roadside drains (gully pots) and has shown 98% effectiveness at removing particulates from expert-certified simulated runoff tests in controlled environments. The device operates without the need for membranes, electricity, or moving parts, making it an affordable and low-maintenance solution. We aim to provide road network authorities and water utility companies with a tool to keep on top of their responsibility to maintain good river health.

What we want to achieve at Geovation:

A comprehensive analysis of urban infrastructure, traffic, and geospatial data is critical in identifying high-priority drains to create a targeted impact on runoff pollution as part of the implementation strategy for the deployment of Guerrilla at scale. As being part of the Geovation cohort, the mentorship and access to resources have created a pathway to creating algorithms and models of runoff pollution distribution which is crucial in executing an evidence-led pragmatic solution for this problem.
