I’ve been invited to the GeoVation Camp

deeHi, I’m Dee and I work with the OS OpenSpace community who use our mapping api (application programming interface) to create web applications to solve all types of problems.

The GeoVation team have been kind enough to invite me to the forthcoming ‘How can we improve transport in Britain?’ GeoVation Camp. This will be my first time at a camp, so I thought I had better start to prepare!

First I had a look at the final list of ideas and there is a very comprehensive set of “problems” to be addressed during Camp. But how do I help find the answer to these problems?

I started by having a look through some of the “transit” related OS OpenSpace applications to see if this could help – here are a few below:

Buckinghamshire County Council, transport and road schemes and projects.

The website is using OS OpenSpace to information on the major road works schemes in Buckinghamshire

North Devon Council Car Park Map

Each car park is identified by a place marker on the map. Clicking on the place marker brings up a link to car park charges and other information.

Bus Stop Locator

Find the nearest 25 bus stops (within 300m of chosen map location). Users need to click on a marker for details of the bus stop name and click link to get real-time bus information.

I am not sure how else to prepare for Camp, but I will keep an eye on any more OS OpenSpace applications with a focus on solving a transit problem. Other than that I will come with an open mind and lots of post it notes.
