We’re finding out more about the team behind adoor – one of the startups to join our Accelerator Programme in cohort 11.
Q: Who are the founders of your startup, and what are your backgrounds?
Luke has joined us after recently finishing his Mathematics degree at the University of Southampton. Fun fact: Luke is a black belt martial artist, so we’ve decided to keep on his good side at all times!
Ian is a Senior Associate Solicitor at a regional law firm and previously spent several years as a practising solicitor working on conveyancing matters – Something that’s come in handy starting adoor!
I (Michael) left Google in Sept 2018, previously working as a Programme manager in the EMEA Retail Hardware team (Google Home, Google Pixel, Chromecast), in tandem I also ran OrDiff, a platform to help others start businesses.
Q: Tell us the story behind your startup – why did you start your company?
A: Have you or a friend or family member moved house recently? Do you remember how you or they felt about it? For many its a stressful time, not fully understanding what’s going on, and just accepting, that ‘that’s the way it’s done’. When you say you’re moving, everyone makes that same grimacing face, there’s a preconceived expectation it’s going to be painful. Why?
The genesis of our idea started when a former bosses house move (in a 7-property chain) took over 12 months to move and he was constantly chasing for updates. I asked (probably not helpfully at the time), “why can’t you just track the process online?”. Fast forward to today and the question I start my pitch with is, “why is it easier to track your takeaway delivery driver than your house move?”
I started adoor to help Movers, to help them understand and feel informed about the process. To understand why some parts of the process take time and to alleviate some of the concerns they may have. This, in turn, takes the burden of answering many common questions movers have off the conveyancers and estate agents to focus their time on completing the transaction.
Q: What does success look like for you?
A: For us, success looks like Movers who understand what’s going on, have answers to common questions when they need them without calling or emailing and aren’t as worried or anxious about whether their move will happen. The latter point especially, moving house should be an exciting step forwards in life, opening adoor to new opportunities! (I can’t promise this is the last pun).
For conveyancers and estate agents, it’s being able to focus their time on completing the transaction, by taking the burden off conveyancers by answering many of the common questions Movers have through adoor.
adoor will not replace estate agents or conveyancers, rather we want to focus on bringing Movers, estate and conveyancers together and become the standard for communication in the house moving process, if you’re moving house – you track it on adoor.
Q: What’s your biggest achievement so far, and why?
A: Launching adoor on November 9th (also my birthday!) was a huge milestone for us, to show what we’ve been working on for the last few months, was a testament to the hard work of Luke & Ian to get where we are today. But the road ahead is even more exciting! We’re working on partnerships that will accelerate how we can help movers, conveyancers and estate agents – Keep an eye on our socials soon 🙂
Q: What are your plans for your startup over the next six months?
A: Over the next 6 months we’re focusing on user testing, seeking investment and fully utilising the opportunity of being a part of the Geovation accelerator programme! Through user testing, by getting the thoughts and feedback of Movers, conveyancers and estate agents will prove pivotal in ensuring we’re building a product for the users and not just how we assume it should be.
Even in the first few weeks of the Geovation programme, the benefits have already been immense working with the engineering team on delving deeper into the product. We’re looking forward to the masterclasses, workshops and everything the programme has to offer.

Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself!
A: 2 things – we started (& still are!) running out of a shed – the true British startup and Ian & I were introduced at the gym we both go to (in the changing rooms 😅 )
