The second startup to join the Geovation Scotland accelerator programme is AboveBoard. We spent five minutes getting to know a bit more about the company’s founders:
Q: Who are the founders behind AboveBoard, and what are your backgrounds?
A: Partners Jamie Henderson and Sarah Morrison. Jamie is a Technical Business Analyst, Sarah is CIMA qualified but more focused on project management. Both have been working in Financial services across Edinburgh and London as contractors on major change programmes.
Q: Tell us the story behind your startup – why did you start your company?
A:We have been customers of a Property Factor for the past 11 years and having experienced ongoing issues ourselves, starting chatting with our network and discovered these issues are quite widespread. We want to address these key issues by offering a new model and giving our customers an improved experience which is transparent (as our name indicates!), community driven and cost-effective.
Q: What does success look like for you?
A: If we can reach the end of our 6 months with an MVP and eager prospects in Edinburgh, we will be very happy! In the long term, rolling this out across other major cities and towns in Scotland would be a massive achievement.
Q: What’s your biggest achievement so far?
A: Having only begun working on the business earlier in the year part time when Sarah’s contract ended, we’d have to say being accepted on the first accelerator programme we applied for and it coincidently being the first Geovation Scotland cohort. We see this as a great opportunity to drive our business forward.
As well as our 6-year-old son of course 😊
Q: What are your plans for your startup over the next six months?
A: Having just joined the Programme with an idea, we have a lot we want to achieve over the next 6 months. We are currently in the process of validating our assumptions to ensure we are able to scale as we hope to. In tandem to that, we are in the process of exploring our options for our MVP. Our business strategy will also be a big focus for us, and we look forward to working with Alex on that.
Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself?
A: Sarah being an avid traveller, we decided to take our son travelling to Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam for 8 weeks before he started school where we had many a crazy adventure. Next instalment of Asia will be the Philippines over the Christmas break, where we hope he will gain his mum’s passion for snorkelling!
